Astronaut Shares Depression Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
