Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
